GROSS!

May 1986

Masters Of The Universe #1

Like so many other things from the ’80s, I remember Madballs being around, but didn’t have any or really pay that much attention to them. Upon looking up some info on them, I was kind of surprised to learn that they actually each had names. Fun fact: The guy with the exposed brain was originally named Crack Head… but they later changed it to Bash Brain – I can’t imagine why! ;D  I’m not sure at what point they changed his name, but if they produced any toys in packaging labeled “Crack Head,” I’m sure those would be worth quite a bit now!

Surprisingly, Madballs are still around! Or, more accurately, they’re around again. In 2006 American Greetings teamed up with Art Asylum and began producing the toys (as well as other Madballs-themed products) again under the Just Play brand. And there’s even a new Madballs YouTube channel! I guess all things old are new again…

Quaking in Their X-Boots!

January 1998

Thunderbolts #10

It took me a minute to figure out exactly what this was – I didn’t really do any PC gaming, so while I’ve heard of Quake, I’m not really that familiar with it. This seems to be a package that lets you re-theme your Quake game to X-Men.

So it seems that in this game, you go around, taking out evil clones of X-Men… but don’t actually have contact with the real X-Men themselves? Seems like kind of a cheat to me.

And I’m Sure He Was Never Heard From Again…

February 1995

X-Force #43

I have a passing familiarity with X-Men and some of their storylines, but am far from an expert. However, according to this ad, apparently Professor X died in 1994/’95!

Considering that this store is holding a memorial service, it seems like it was a pretty big deal at the time, but did anyone really think he was gone for good? Comic book deaths are so fleeting, especially for main characters – I’m always at least a little suspicious when someone “dies” in a comic.

I Could Eat Wolverine for Breakfast!… Or a Snack…

February 1995

X-Force #43

After posting an entire series of ads from an X-Men comic, here’s an ad that actually features the X-Men! The ’90s were a good time for the X-Men – it seemed like there was every conceivable type of X-Men-branded product everywhere you turned! Well, here’s one result of that: X-Men gummy snacks!

Personally, I don’t think I’d want to put anything “X-ploding with power” in my mouth, but to each his own, I guess.

They Would Be a Mile High if You Stack Them Up!

If you want comics, here’s the place to get them! If you’ve ever read comics, you’ve probably seen ads for Mile High Comics – well, here’s the first of mine for you to check out!
