Did He Say “Strap In” or “Strap On”?

Wonder Woman #37

Sorry, but I couldn’t resist the Family Guy joke. Anyway, here we’ve got Sky Shark, a game full of action-packed aviation adventure!

With the exception of one holiday-themed ad that I’m saving for Christmas, this closes out Wonder Woman #37! I promise that the next ’80s comic I post from will have a lot more toys!

Get Set For Radical Action!

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

Radical action, indeed! It looks like both these games are positively packed with action!

I find it interesting that it says “Capcom introduces two new thrilling games to its Nintendo series” – was Capcom making games for other systems at the time? Because it seems like Nintendo was by far the biggest player at the time.

Oh well, something for me to look up sometime, I guess.

Hungry Like The Operation Wolf

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

It’s the world’s #1 arcade game! And now you can play it at home! It’s… Operation Wolf!

Yep, “take no prisoners” and “teach the terrorists what terror is all about” in this action-packed game!

But personally, I’m much more interested in Bubble Bobble. 😉

QuickShot – Taking Aim at Your Cash!

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

Video games were hot in 1989, so people tried to cash in by making better, faster, more powerful controllers. From what I’m told, QuickShot’s performance doesn’t even remotely fit this description or live up to the amount of excitement that they promise.

I’m no video game expert (unlike some people I know), but I’ve never even heard of the MSX or Amstrad systems – anyone out there remember those?

WCW = Woefully Cheesy Wrestling?

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

Here is an ad that is elegant in its simplicity – no fancy screenshots, no exciting description of the game – in fact, other than “BE A VIDEO WARRIOR!” at the top, this is probably the most matter-of-fact ad that I’ve come across.

1989-12_WCW_P

Apparently, if you’re a fan of WCW, this is all you need to know, and if you’re not, then they’re not going to waste your time.

As always, I like to read the fine print, and find it quite interesting that there’s a “Phone Counseling Hotline” included at the end of this ad. Counseling for what?? Are they assuming that anyone who would buy this game has some kind of mental problems, ’cause that’s kind of what they’re making it sound like!

Fabio-lous Action!

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

While you might associate Fabio with a more… umm… romantic… type of action, here he is as a tough, manly barbarian in order to sell video games – Iron Sword: Wizards & Warriors II, specifically.

I find it interesting that the “ultimate warrior” doesn’t seem to have any battle scars… I guess maybe he’s just so good that no one can touch him (except the ladies, of course)!
