Instant Life? Is That for All the Losers Out There?

September 1963

This ad actually turned out to be more educational for me than I was expecting! With the headline “INSTANT LIVE SEA ANIMALS” I initially assumed it was some generic knockoff of Sea-Monkeys… but then I noticed that it actually used the term “sea-monkeys” in the description. So that left me wondering – if these are genuine Sea-Monkeys, then why is the term only mentioned once in the text rather than in the headline and repeatedly throughout the ad?

Upon doing a little research, I discovered that these creatures weren’t officially rebranded as Sea-Monkeys until 1962, and before that, they were known as “Instant Life.” Although this ad was printed in 1963, maybe it just hadn’t been updated yet – at least, that’s my best guess.

And if you’d like to learn more about the fascinating history of Sea-Monkeys, check out this article!

Be POPULAR and WANTED!

X-Men #1

Do you want the power to influence others and bend them to your will? If so, this is your lucky day, because apparently the solution is only $1.98!

Look, guys, you can hypnotize beautiful women! Just imagine the possibilities! But don’t worry, ladies – the order form has a checkbox saying “I agree that I will not use this power for other than proper use” – so no need to worry about date rape here!  (On second thought, maybe that checkbox determines whether they send you the regular version or (if the box isn’t checked) the supervillain version of the book.)

Back When People Actually REPAIRED Stuff

Wait a minute – what’s this about repairing broken TVs and radios? You don’t repair broken electronics, you just buy new ones!

Times have certainly changed! I wonder how many people are out there these days who could actually repair a TV – probably not a whole lot anymore!

Any Wolves in the Howling Commandos?

This has been a year full of fury, so why not end it with Fury? Nick Fury!

Yes, Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, back before Nick Fury was director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and way before Nick Fury was Samuel L. Jackson, he was just a badass army guy!

Get Your Very Own… Lizard… Tree?

September 1963

X-Men #1

At first glance, I thought this ad was for some kind of pet, but on closer inspection, it actually appears to be some kind of plant.

I’m struck by the bizarreness of this – both the plant itself (which I have no idea of what it actually is), and the fact that it’s being marketed as a lizard!

Back When $25/Week Was a GOOD Thing

X-Men #1

Ah, the good old days – back before cars had computers, and average Joes could fix cars themselves without having to spend a fortune on fancy equipment. It seems that back in the ’60s auto mechanics were in high demand, and could get pretty decent pay too!

I think my favorite part about this ad is the “Portable Viso-Analyzer,” available only through CTI. Based on the fact that I’ve never heard of it before, I’m going to guess that either calling it “the most versatile of all trouble-shooting instruments” is a bit of an exaggeration, or it’s just a fancy name for a multimeter.

Paying $1 for Pennies!?

September 1963

X-Men #1

Coins! Coins!! COINS!!! This is our second installment from Centre Coin Company – in the 1972 installment, they’re only looking to buy coins, but in this one, the focus is on selling!

However, they do have quite an offer – fill the penny album they send you, and you’ll get $150! Makes me wonder just how rare some of those pennies are and how many kids (if any) actually cashed in on this deal.
