Taking Quite a Risk

March 1985

G.I. Joe #33

I’ve never actually played Risk – it seems like it would be too complicated to be any fun (for me, anyway) – but it’s been around for decades, so I guess they must be doing something right!

“[I]t’s just like the game the big boys play” – so here they are, quite literally, calling war a game! Sorry, Parker Brothers, but I think quite a few people would disagree with that sentiment.

“Throw Me the Idol!”

G.I. Joe # 33

There’s this awesome theater nearby that’s been showing classic movies every Sunday, and for two consecutive Sundays I got to enjoy Indiana Jones on the big screen! So when I ran across this ad, I figured I might as well keep up with the Jones’!

On first glance, I thought this was a video game, but it’s actually a role-playing game.

My favorite part about this ad? The fine print at the bottom that says, “PRODUCTS OF YOUR IMAGINATION are trademarks owned by TSR, Inc.” Damn! That’s pretty severe!

Did He Say “Strap In” or “Strap On”?

Wonder Woman #37

Sorry, but I couldn’t resist the Family Guy joke. Anyway, here we’ve got Sky Shark, a game full of action-packed aviation adventure!

With the exception of one holiday-themed ad that I’m saving for Christmas, this closes out Wonder Woman #37! I promise that the next ’80s comic I post from will have a lot more toys!

Get Set For Radical Action!

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

Radical action, indeed! It looks like both these games are positively packed with action!

I find it interesting that it says “Capcom introduces two new thrilling games to its Nintendo series” – was Capcom making games for other systems at the time? Because it seems like Nintendo was by far the biggest player at the time.

Oh well, something for me to look up sometime, I guess.

Hungry Like The Operation Wolf

December 1989

Wonder Woman #37

It’s the world’s #1 arcade game! And now you can play it at home! It’s… Operation Wolf!

Yep, “take no prisoners” and “teach the terrorists what terror is all about” in this action-packed game!

But personally, I’m much more interested in Bubble Bobble. 😉

It’s Chaos! It’s Insanity! It’s…

January 1997 (1996)

Deadpool #1

This is it – the final ad I’ve got to post from Deadpool #1, making this the first book that I’ve closed out! So what have we got here? Bedlam, a video game about preventing the imminent destruction of mankind.

This ad doesn’t tell you a whole lot about the game, but at least it’s more descriptive than WCW!

Is That a Rocket in Your Jockey, Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

January 1997 (1996)

Deadpool #1

At first glance, Rocket Jockey looks a bit like pod racing from “Star Wars: Episode I” (but actually came out first!), but upon closer inspection, actually sounds pretty badass:

“…I will not hold Rocket Jockey liable for my being decapitated by another jockey’s cable, crushed against the hood of another rocket, burnt beyond recognition by jet exhaust, or other injuries to myself or others et al.”

Nice! I only wish there had been action like that in “Episode I”!
